Goodbye To Our Summer

So that was it. The summer holidays are over. The school uniforms are lying out on the floor ready for the morning. Breakfast will be brought forward by an hour and a half, and moved out of the bedroom (tea in bed, I bid you a tearful goodbye).

And we didn't tick off all the things on our 44 Things To Do And See This Summer list. We haven't sailed in a boat, been to the zoo, got lost in a maze, been to York, built a raft, or had a kiddie cocktail party (although we did have a knicker-bocker-glory party using cocktail glasses, so I'm half-counting that). We haven't been abroad or stayed away anywhere for more than one night. But we have:

... watched our rabbits bring up 10 babies ...

... raced through tiny waves ...

... explored rock pools ...

... met some crabs ...

... slept in a gypsy caravan called Daisy ...

... painted, printed, built, made and drawn ...

... blown bubbles at a festival ....

... swum across a river ...

... been there when two of our best friends got married ...

... celebrated a third and a seventh birthday ...

... eaten in a very fancy child-hosted tea salon ...

... picked our own tomatoes ...

... watched Yorkshire finish twelfth in the Olympic medal table – beating entire countries no less ...

... and spent time with some of our very best friends in the entire world...

And it's been the best summer holiday I can remember.

Summer on a shoestring.

The final thing we did from our list was number 35 'Build a Cardboard Skyscraper'. Which I'll tell you more about next time. But for now, goodbye summer. Come back soon.

  1. That looks like a wonderful summer. Daisy looks wonderful - so romantic. When I was a little girl I used to dream of living in an old fashioned caravan like that. Bliss x

    1. It really was, Karen. The gypsy caravan was wonderful, but very rough and ready because they hadn't finished renovating it when we stayed... lots of rusty nails scattered around and sticky paint. It also sloped quite badly, so poor Middle rolled out of bed and landed on the floor twice in the night. A proper adventure! Love your blog, by the way xx

    1. Thanks, lovely Lou. I'm glad you had a brilliant summer too. I absolutely and utterly adored your post on what little boys need – seems like they got all of that in their summer. So much of our summer was most definitely down to your list inspiration, so thank you lots and lots xx

  5. It was huge!!! That's a grown-up hand holding it. I found it, caught it in a tiny fishing net, and was ever so proud... until a man about 10 feet away from us emptied his bucket and at least 15 giant crabs toppled out. xxx
